Summer may be coming to an end, but Prime Video and Freevee are heating things up again with a slew of new shows and movies in September 2024. If you’re looking for new movies to watch in the coming weeks, both streaming services are happy to have a whole host of top new releases to keep you entertained.
This month’s lineup has something for everyone, from the highly anticipated “Top Gear” crew finale, “The Grand Tour,” to one of this year’s most unique fantasy films, “The American Society of Magical Negroes.” There are also plenty of family-friendly options on Prime Video, including the surprisingly good “Puss in Boots” sequel and the not-so-surprisingly great “Paddington 2.” And if you’re looking for the next series to binge-watch, all seven seasons of CBS’s modern-day Sherlock Holmes series “Elementary” are also available on the streaming service.
So, without further ado, here’s our guide to the latest and greatest releases coming to Prime Video and Freevee in August 2024.
NEW ON PRIME VIDEO IN SEPTEMBER 2024: TOP SELECTION
“The big tour: one for the road”
Watch on
Get your tissues ready: the final chapter of the most legendary era of car TV is upon us. Top Gear stars Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May complete the final leg of The Grand Tour with a trip to Zimbabwe in this one-off special.
Ignoring their producer’s instructions, the trio set off on one last grand adventure with three cars they’ve always wanted to own – a Lancia Monte Carlo, a Ford Capri 3-litre and a Triumph Stag – bringing an emotional conclusion to the popular British car series. First broadcast in 2015, The Grand Tour reunited Clarkson, Hammond and May after Clarkson was fired for punching a producer, bringing an abrupt end to Top Gear. Each episode features their trademark banter, camaraderie and often chaotic antics.

“The American Society of Magical Negroes”
Watch on
The American Society of Magical Negroes may have been a box office flop, but we hope its arrival on Prime Video will finally give this unique modern fantasy the audience it deserves.
The eponymous society is a secret organization of black people with magical powers dedicated to protecting the black community by making life easier for white people. Their newest recruit, Aren, played by Justice Smith from Pokémon Detective Pikachu and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, is a failed artist who is initially thrilled to discover he has supernatural powers. However, when the society lands him a job at a major social media platform, he realizes he is little more than a diversity worker. Disillusioned with the mission, he begins to fight back against the flaws in the system that disrupt the society’s magic. The fantasy film also stars David Alan Grier as Aren’s mentor Roger.

‘Elementary’
Watch on
All seven seasons of CBS’ Elementary are coming to Prime Video this month. This Emmy-nominated police drama was one of several Sherlock Holmes reimaginings that dominated Hollywood in the 2010s, and it still managed to carve out a place for itself. What sets it apart is its setting — modern-day New York City — and the inclusion of a gender-bending Dr. Watson (Lucy Liu) who is Holmes’ equal, rather than playing second fiddle as his assistant.
“Eli Stone” star Jonny Lee Miller plays the detective himself, fresh from a fall from grace after a stint in rehab. Still battling the addiction that ended his illustrious career in London, he is urged by his father to work with Dr. Watson, a former surgeon and addiction specialist, to avoid relapse. Much to their chagrin, Holmes is determined to follow his own post-rehab program: solving the most difficult cases on the NYPD’s docket.

“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”
Watch on
I never saw the first Puss in Boots movie, so I was pretty skeptical when all my animation nerd friends started singing Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’s praises. But I’m happy to say that this sequel, a decade in the making, is the rare spin-off that outshines the original and rivals the Spider-Verse franchise in quality.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a clever reimagining of the character, mixing 3D and 2D animation to create the feel of a storybook illustration, with lushly painted backgrounds, stylized imagery and bright colors. Antonio Banderas returns as the famous feline, joined by Salma Hayek’s Kitty and a new cast of fairytale colleagues, including Jack Horner (John Mulaney), Goldilocks (Florence Pugh) and her Three Bears Crime Family (Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone and Samson Kayo).

“Paddington2”
Watch on
While you wait for Paddington in Peru to hit theaters, you can watch one of the best sequels of all time on Prime Video: Paddington 2. Ben Whishaw reprises his role as the voice of everyone’s favorite marmalade-loving bear, and is supported by an all-star cast that includes Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins and Hugh Grant.
The light-hearted film begins with Paddington trying to figure out what to get his Aunt Lucy for her birthday. After finding the perfect gift, a pop-up book, he works odd jobs to raise the money to buy it, but things take a turn when the book is stolen and Paddington ends up behind bars. With the help of some cunning inmates, as well as the Brown family, he sets out to clear his name, unmask the real thief, and uncover the surprising secrets the book holds.
