New Mexico State assistant Tyler Wright faces charges of racist comments

play

Let’s be clear: Tyler Wright can say whatever he wants about the basic beauty of our perfectly imperfect country.

Tyler Wright can also get fired for saying whatever he wants.

New Mexico State offensive coordinator Wright was absent from the Aggies’ rivalry game against New Mexico on Saturday after the Las Cruces Sun-News reported that Wright had more than 150 posts on his X account from more than 10 years ago, The derogatory language included African Americans, Africans, Hispanics and others.

NMSU officials say Wright will not be with the team while the university investigates the contributions.

Before we go any further: This is not about cancel culture. Or the mistakes of a young man who has moved forward in life, or everyone deserves a second chance, or what someone cares about. Or some other excuse of convenience.

This is about stupidity.

We all make decisions, regardless of age and regardless of their impact. We are all responsible for the consequences of these decisions.

I know this is hard for some to understand, but stupid decisions – in this case, offensive comments on social media, the largest city square in the world – are likely to result in negative reactions.

It wasn’t long ago when Michigan assistant recruiting director Glenn Schembechler — son of legendary coach Bo Schembechler — resigned after racist and insensitive posts were found on his social media.

Look, I’m no constitutional scholar, but I’m pretty sure there’s nothing in this magnificent document that promises protection from stupidity. Or responsibility. Or responsibility.

A job is not a right. A job at a public university where tax dollars support the university is certainly not an entitlement. It’s a privilege.

And with that privilege comes expectations, whether from the university, the athletic department or the head coach.

So if brand new NMSU President Valerio Ferme — who was hired just nine days ago — decides that Wright’s posts are problematic, he may decide that Wright must deal with the consequences of those posts consistent with the expectations of the job.

I don’t like getting into technicalities, but if I don’t – if right and wrong aren’t clearly explained from the start – political nonsense comes into play. Then all those empty calories take center stage.

Instead of the initial stupid decision – repeated more than 100 times.

Make no mistake, Ferme can decide to keep Wright in the program. He can tell Wright has changed and he knows his heart and everyone deserves a second chance.

And I’m okay with that. Because Ferme will then have to deal with the consequences of this decision. This also applies to coach Tony Sanchez, who has to deal with possible consequences in the locker room.

In these highly volatile moments, it is best to eliminate emotions and focus on facts.

Wright made a stupid decision 13 years ago and then repeated it again and again from 2011 to 2014. It wasn’t a one-off mistake or a careless remark. This is a sustained track record until he began his coaching career as a football intern in 2015.

The posts had not been deleted as of early Saturday afternoon. Honestly, they don’t need to be deleted.

Because Tyler Wright can say whatever he wants.

He can also get fired for saying whatever he wants.
