A New Bedford-based freight company has received approval to serve Vineyard more than eight months after requesting it.

The Steamship Authority Board has unanimously approved amending a license application by 41 North Offshore to allow the company to operate limited on-demand cargo service between New Bedford and Martha’s Vineyard through December 2026. The application for this license amendment was originally submitted in October.

The vote during the Tuesday, Aug. 20, meeting allows 41 North to make one trip per day on the condition that the trucks are located on Steamship Authority property and the freight company notifies the ferry line at least 24 hours before those trips begin. 41 North is limited to 80,000 pounds, the legal maximum weight of a tractor-trailer, and is prohibited from hauling oversized materials.

The company had offered similar services to Nantucket, although the proposal had previously faced opposition from authorities in Tisbury and Oak Bluffs due to concerns about traffic congestion. The restrictions imposed on the company appeased the towns’ authorities.
