Nelly Furtado: “When I started producing Maneater, flames shot out of the speaker” | Nelly Furtado

You’ve often declared your love for Oasis. Did you manage to get tickets?? Bauhaus66

I’ve just recorded Never Mind the Buzzcocks in the UK wearing my Oasis t-shirt – and this was before they announced the reunion, so my love of Oasis isn’t exactly trendy. It started when I was 17, with the first two albums. I feel like Noel Gallagher taught me to play guitar without him knowing because I was playing along. My song Turn Off the Light has the same chords as Wonderwall. I’ve seen them in concert two or three times. One in Vancouver was so good I wrote a five-star review in my college newspaper. Liam and Noel got into an argument during the fifth song. They threw the microphones on the stage and the show was over, but their exit made it extra special. I’ve driven past their parents’ house in Burnage and would die to see the reunion tour.

Is it true that your song “Maneater” caused a studio fire? VerulamiumParkRanger

Yes. It was my first day working on (2006 album) Loose with (producers) Timbaland and Danja. We were in Miami. Timbaland said, “I made this beat for you,” and played it super loud. Suddenly there was a burning smell, so much smoke, and a flame shot out of the speaker. Someone came to replace the speaker, but we were totally confused: Maybe we should put this song away until tomorrow. And we were working on a different song. It was a super weird start for Maneater, but a great start for the album. When Kamala Harris started using Maneater recently, I posted a comment on TikTok that consisted of a plate with a fork and knife. She’s eating! I was thrilled that she used my song.

When you released Loose, you were criticized for suddenly presenting a hypersexualized version of yourself with songs/videos like Promiscuous and Maneater. Did you feel pressured to do that or was it something you genuinely wanted to do? consumer

I don’t agree that it was hypersexualized, but I was very conscious of everything I did. I’m very involved in all my music videos, visuals and music, so no, I wasn’t pushed. We went into the studio and I just did what I felt. I think I’m one of the most dynamic artists ever. I’ll say that out loud. I just think people are used to others being one-dimensional, and I’m not. I never want to be boring, that’s for sure – well, sometimes I am boring too! But you have to try different things.

You have the beautiful 2006 song All good things (come to an end) with Chris Martin of Coldplay. Coldplay has been working hard on environmentally friendly ways to release physical albums and tour. Do you have similarly environmentally friendly plans for 7? McScootikins

I haven’t approved any merch yet because I want to make sure it’s sustainable before I sell anything, but I’ve never really sold anything other than music. Merchandise on tour, yes, but never perfume or clothing. I’m not perfect, but deep down I really care about the environment and I’ve never felt comfortable making a ton of products to sell with my name on them. My music is unique enough. I love that there are younger artists talking about this stuff. Billie Eilish talks about it on every show. That’s brave and bold.

What were you thinking when you sang “All Good Things (Come to an End)”? Mr Moderat

Chris Martin wrote that line. He came into the studio but had to leave after a few hours, so I said, “Why do all good jams come to an end?” He sang back, “All good things come to an end,” and the next day I wrote the verses. When I sing, I’m totally introspective and kind of tripping. I want to make people feel like they can join in. My dream is to sing it live with Chris or Coldplay. That would be so cool.

Where are you on your first album, Wow, Nelly!is a Fado-influenced gem sung in Portuguese. Are there any plans to release more Fado songs or sing in Portuguese? JulioP84

My parents are Azorean, so I speak with an Azorean accent. I wrote this song when I was 17 and played it for the first time with an acoustic guitar at my grandmother’s birthday party for my whole extended family. I haven’t really written much Portuguese music since then, but I’ve been drawn to it recently. I did a remix of my song Força with Ana Moura, who is from Lisbon, and I’ve been talking to a lot of Brazilian and Portuguese artists. Fado uses a very traditional instrument called the guitarra, which you can hear on Scared of You on my first album. Fado is melancholic music. You live in this constant state of nostalgic longing… hypermelancholy. It’s basically Portuguese emo.

Will you ever release the previously unreleased song Crowd Control? You mentioned that you are working on an EP with Timb.Aland and Justin Timberlake…maybe you could add it? Eick_121uk7

Some people are so excited about the idea of this song because it was with Justin Timberlake. I had just finished Loose right before Justin started FutureSex/LoveSounds, so our paths crossed in the studio and we wrote a song called Crowd Control. I’d love to dig it out. Timbaland was just touring with Missy Elliott, but we always try to collaborate and I think we’ll all end up in the studio together again, so I’ll have to ask Timbaland where that song is.

How do you write your songs? Subscribe

I turn the mic on and then it all just comes out of my mouth. Usually the lyrics and melody come together, or sometimes I just mumble until a melody and rhythm comes out. It’s like a mix of rapping and singing, but I always press record or I forget what’s coming out. Sometimes I jam for hours and go back and pick parts, or sometimes it comes in the first five minutes. There’s a song, All Comes Back, on 7 where Charlotte Day Wilson came in with a chorus and just sang it on the piano, but mostly I just open my mouth to start writing. I first did that when I was four, so maybe I haven’t learned any new tricks since then.

What do you think about Four Tet’s Only Human with the sample from (loose album title) Afraid? Andyouknowme

Four Tet is great and I wish it would be released officially. I think it wasn’t released because it samples a children’s choir, so it felt weird to resample a children’s choir. It was a matter of conscience, but maybe we can figure it out.

I loved your cover of Rush’s time stands still. Why did you report on this? Chaos Magician

There was a movie called Score: A Hockey Musical in 2010 that starred Olivia Newton-John and was written by a Canadian (Michael McGowan) and shot in Canada. I was in the movie and they wanted a song. Rush are obviously a big Canadian band, so I suggested Time Stand Still. I fell in love with the song while driving around and heard it on the radio. They’re an iconic band that’s very respected in Canada, so I was thrilled when they gave it their stamp of approval.

7 will be released on September 20th by Mercury
