Nebraska lawmakers consider tax on alternative nicotine products

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KLKN) – Another tax is under debate as Nebraska lawmakers try to raise money to cut property taxes.

On Wednesday, the Finance Committee considered a bill that would tax alternative nicotine products such as the increasingly popular Zyn pouches.

Under the amendment to Bill 9, users would pay a tax of 10 cents per ounce.

Sen. Jana Hughes of Seward said some children who used to vape have switched to products like Zyn since vaping detectors were installed in schools.

“It’s nicotine powder in a little pouch,” she said. “You can put it in your mouth and it’s not as obvious as smoking on a device.”

Hughes said 385 million doses of Zyn were delivered to the U.S. in 2023, a 62% increase over 2022.

The Finance Committee will hold a board meeting on Thursday morning.
