NDOT opens additional lanes on Pyramid Highway as widening work continues

CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) – The Nevada Department of Transportation is opening additional lanes on southbound Pyramid Highway as work continues to widen the road.

A third lane is now open on southbound Pyramid Highway between Los Altos Parkway and Queen Way. According to NDOT, workers will open a third northbound lane between Queen Way and Shoppers Way in the coming weeks.

The work is part of a $66 million, two-year project to widen and improve four kilometers of the highway, which is used by 50,000 drivers daily.

The following traffic controls will continue to apply to motorists on Pyramid Highway between Queen Way and Golden View Drive until summer 2025:

  • The lanes will be slightly reduced in width and relocated through the work zone around the clock.
  • The lanes will be reduced to one lane at night, mainly between 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. from Sunday evening to Friday morning.
  • While most delays are short-term, drivers in the construction zone can expect travel delays of up to 30 minutes.
  • Due to the construction site, reduced speed limits apply around the clock.
  • Access for pedestrians and cyclists remains possible. There are marked diversions for pedestrians in certain sections of the construction site.
  • During construction, access to the BLM recreation area on the west side of the highway will be closed.
  • Cross streets in the area, such as Disc Drive and Los Altos Parkway, experience occasional nightly single-lane closures.
  • The construction schedule depends on the weather and is subject to change.

The project will involve widening Pyramid Highway from four to six lanes over a distance of approximately one and a half miles between Queen Way and Los Altos Parkway and rebuilding three-quarters of a mile of the existing four-lane road between Los Altos Parkway and Golden View Drive.

The project also includes a 10-foot-wide shared path, 5-foot-wide bike lanes, raised medians, smart traffic signals, improved lighting and other improvements.
