National Garage Sale Day is here. What you should know in Delaware

play

National Garage Sale Day is August 10, but neighborhood garage sales have been going on all summer long.

National Garage Sale Day always takes place on the second Saturday in August and is a peak sales day for bargain hunters, collectors and new homeowners or renters looking to furnish their new home.

It’s also a great time to clean out the junk in your basement or garage and make a few bucks on the side.

Before you plan your own garage sale, there are a few things you should know, including laws that may restrict sales in your community.

Important rules in Delaware

In New Castle County, flea markets are not allowed to be held for more than three days in a row. In addition, flea markets are not allowed to be held more than four times a year.

In Kent County, garage sales may not be held for more than two days in a row. However, garage sales may be held for up to eight days in total during the calendar year.

Sussex County’s restrictions are similar: You can host a flea market for three days in a row, but no more than three events per year. Anything beyond that would require a conditional use permit, according to a county spokesperson.

Some municipalities also have regulations you should be aware of. In Dover, it may be illegal to even hold a garage sale in your area due to zoning restrictions. Single-unit garage sales are not permitted in a Service Commercial Zone (C-3), Highway Commercial Zone (C-4), Manufacturing Zone (M), or Industrial Park Manufacturing Zone (IPM). Check your zone before planning a sale.

Tips from a pro for estate sales

Joanne Panico, owner of the junk-selling company House of Gigi, sells about half of the items on the first day of an estate auction, such as a recent one in Wilmington that began Aug. 8.

“It was a great day. We had a lot of people there. I mean, we sold almost half of our stuff,” Panico said.

Panico sells items from homes where people have died. “So it’s like a garage sale, but it’s a whole house,” she said.

On the third day of the sale everything is half price.

Their latest estate auction at 515 Southhampton Lane ends Saturday, conveniently on National Yard Sale Day.

“We’ll keep going until it’s all gone,” Panico said.
