Mushfiqur scores 191 points, Bangladesh narrowly beats Pakistan

Mushfiqur Rahim narrowly missed a double hundred as Bangladesh posted a total of 565 in reply to Pakistan’s first innings total of 6-448 on the fourth day of the opening Test in Rawalpindi.

Mushfiqur scored 191 and partnered Mehidy Hasan Miraz (77) for the seventh wicket to reach a stand of 196 runs as Bangladesh posted their highest total against Pakistan in a run-fest at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Bangladesh No. 8 Miraz became the fifth batsman to score 50 or more runs in his innings, with four days seeing more than 1,000 runs scored and 17 wickets taken.

Pakistan finished the penultimate day 1-23, trailing by 94 runs, after narrowly losing opener Saim Ayub.

Abdullah Shafique was on batting surface 12 and captain Shan Masood on the other side on batting surface 9.

“We didn’t expect the wicket to be so slow,” said Pakistan assistant coach Azhar Mahmood.

“It was a hot day but credit goes to our bowlers who ran hard and gave their best.”

The unresponsive pitch seemed to disarm Pakistan’s otherwise impressive attack featuring Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah.

After Bangladesh regained their lead at 5-316, Naseem (3-93) removed Litton Das (56) but Mushfiqur and Miraz batted resolutely to prevent a collapse.

Mushfiqur’s effort was first-class: the small 37-year-old scored his eleventh hundred in the Test and continued to fight.

But Mohammad Ali denied Mushfiqur a double hundred when he caught the batsman behind after a brilliant knock that included 22 fours and a six.

Miraz put Bangladesh ahead by hitting six fours before Afridi sent him back.
