Multiple agencies respond to reports of explosion near Ray Nixon Power Plant

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) — Multiple fire departments are responding to reports of an explosion near the Ray Nixon Power Plant.

The plant is located on the west side of I-25, south of Fountain.

Officials told KRDO13 that the Fountain Fire Department (FFD) and the Colorado Springs Fire Department were on scene.

KRDO13 has a crew en route to the scene of the accident to learn more. We will update you as soon as we learn more.

This afternoon, an incident occurred with a contract worker near an ash dump site south of the Ray Nixon and Front Range power plants. We have a contract with this company to maintain our heavy equipment/large trucks that haul material – such as ash and coal – at the dump site.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department will lead the investigation.

The contractor’s employee was flown to Denver for medical treatment. We are unable to provide any information on his condition at this time.

While our focus is on the health of this individual, we can inform our community that the construction site is not at risk and that there were no injuries to other workers or damage to our infrastructure.
