MSU’s Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll wins GAM Senior Women’s Championship for third consecutive year

BRUTUS. (WILX) – Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll of Haslett won her third consecutive GAM Women’s Senior Championship with what she called a boring game of golf on Tuesday at Hidden River Golf & Casting Club.

“Yesterday I had a lot more chances to make a birdie than today,” said the 52-year-old head coach of the Michigan State University women’s golf team.

“Today it was just a pretty consistent game of golf, hit the ball on the fairway, hit the green, two putts. It wasn’t exciting. I would say boring, but that kind of boring works.”

Slobodnik-Stoll shot 1-under-par 71 for the second year in a row, for a total of 142 strokes, to win this year’s Championship presented by Golf Digest by seven strokes. Her name will once again be immortalized on the Sara Wold Trophy and it was her record 19th GAM individual title.

Lori Schlicher of Lewiston, the reigning Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur champion, shot 73 of 149 to finish second.

Julie Massa of Pentwater, a two-time former champion, was next with 75 for 151 and Kathy Eisenga of Spring Lake shot 79 for 154 to finish fourth.

Slobodnik-Stoll, a member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, said she had played the Hidden River course for only the second time when she arrived this week. She played there over the Fourth of July weekend as a guest of John and Becky Duffey, the owners and notable MSU alumni and donors.

“I think it’s a great course,” she said. “Obviously the beauty is breathtaking and it’s just a very nice course to play. The greens were in great shape for the tournament and if you play well, of course you like the golf course.”

Slobodnik-Stoll, 52, who is entering her 29th year as Spartans coach, said she doesn’t set up scoring opportunities but always tries to shoot as deep as possible to give herself a chance to win.

“You know, I watch my (MSU) players and see their scores, and players at every level are shooting 66 and under,” she said. “Yesterday I had enough chances to do that, and today I just didn’t hit enough shots close enough to the green. There’s always more to work on, more to try and accomplish. I keep trying, and it’s always nice to win.”
