MPS asks voters about $20 million technology tax on November ballot

The Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) Board of Education has approved a levy ballot question that voters will decide on in November.

The issue concerns a technology levy that would target Minneapolis taxpayers for an additional $20 million in annual technology funding.

If approved, the levy would not significantly increase technology spending other than personnel and other cost increases, nor would it enable new technology initiatives, according to MPS.

According to MPS, the levy would minimize cuts in other areas by allowing general funds spent on technology to be used for other programs and services.

MPS hopes that the levy, if approved, will help alleviate budget problems caused by increased costs and “chronic underfunding” of programs.

“Increasing revenue through this technology levy is just one way MPS is stabilizing its financial situation and ensuring a secure future for all students,” said Ibrahima Diop, MPS’s chief financial officer. “If the levy increase is not approved, MPS will have to make further cuts to resources, programs and support that are critical to our students.”

Election day is November 5th.
