Looking for a weekend event steeped in history? George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate in Virginia hosts fall events that might be just the thing for you.

The fall fun begins this weekend in Mount Vernon with the Colonial Market and Fair.

“We have artisans dating back to the 18th century who make their goods by hand, from pottery to glasswork. We have an apothecary and handmade soaps, and just the whole spectrum. It’s an excellent opportunity to do some holiday shopping and find unique gifts,” said Julie Almacy, vice president of media and communications at Mount Vernon.

As for the foliage and other seasonal events, she said the scenery is worth seeing.

“Fall is the best time of year to visit,” Almacy said.

She said they have a full fall program for all ages.

“In September, our focus is on textiles. On September 21 and 22, we’ll talk about 18th-century housewares and the things that colonial Americans used in their homes. On September 28 and 29, we’ll focus specifically on 18th-century clothing,” Almacy said.

There is a full program at George Washington’s estate, including Halloween-themed events.

“On October 26th, we have a trick-or-treat festival at Mount Vernon where people can collect candy. There’s a costume parade, magic and puppet shows. At Mount Vernon, they can meet Martha Washington, and it’s really a great time to enjoy the grounds,” Almacy said.
