Motorcyclist in hospital after collision with sign knocked over by dump truck on Hurst Highway

According to police, a motorcyclist was hospitalized Wednesday morning after crashing into a fallen road sign that had been knocked over by a dump truck on Loop 820 in Hurst.

Hurst police responded to the dump truck crash in the 400 block of northbound Interstate 820 just after 3 a.m. Officers were told the dump truck was leaving a construction site when the roof of the vehicle struck a sign. The impact caused the metal sign to fall across the highway, creating a road hazard, police said in a news release.

The driver of the dump truck left the scene of the accident before the police arrived.

Officers used their patrol cars to close I-820 and divert traffic to the Pipeline Road exit, police said. But around 3:40 a.m., a motorcycle drove around the patrol cars and crashed into the wreckage, the news release said.

Officers administered first aid until the Hurst Fire Department arrived. The motorcyclist was taken by ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
