Most Central Florida public schools plan to reopen Friday

Lake, Orange, Seminole and Volusia school districts all plan to reopen their campuses Friday after a one-day closure due to Hurricane Helene.

The Osceola County School District will be closed Friday because that day was already a school holiday.

At least 60 of Florida’s 67 school districts, from the Keys to the Panhandle, were closed for at least one day this week as the storm threatened the state.

Most Central Florida school districts said classes will be held Friday, weather permitting.

“Based on the current forecast, all schools and facilities will reopen on Friday, September 27th,” Orange County Public Schools wrote on its Facebook page. “The primary decision point for opening schools and facilities is based on wind speeds and National Weather Service models that show wind speeds will be well below our 35 mph limit to allow buses to operate on the road.”

District officials said they would monitor weather conditions and inspect the campus early Friday, alerting parents to any change in plans.

“We continue to work closely with Seminole County Emergency Management to monitor weather conditions in our region,” Seminole County Public Schools wrote on Facebook. “At this time, we anticipate that our district will be fully operational and school will be in session on Friday, September 27, 2024.”
