Montana homeowners can apply for this year’s property tax refund

HELENA – The Montana Department of Revenue will soon distribute its second round of property tax refunds to eligible Montana taxpayers as part of a property tax relief package set to take effect in 2023.

The agency states that 10,000 rebate requests were submitted within the first 10 minutes of the portal opening on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

The property tax refund is a refund of up to $675 of the property tax paid on a primary residence.

To qualify, you must have owned, lived in, and paid property taxes on a Montana residence for at least seven months in 2023.

Properties owned by a legal entity or irrevocable trusts are excluded from the refund.

Montana residents must apply for the refund between August 15 and October 1, 2024. The quickest way for taxpayers to apply for the refund is online. Applying for a property tax refund online should only take a few minutes.



The Montana Department of Revenue provides tools on its website to help taxpayers compile this information. MTN has also broken down some ways you can find your property’s geocode.

The agency will begin accepting refund applications for the 2023 tax year on August 15, 2024, and all applications must be submitted by October 1, 2024.

Refunds requested online will be granted within 30 days of submitting the request. Paper requests may take up to 90 days to process.

After your refund has been processed, please wait at least 4 weeks before contacting us about your check. Refund checks are mailed to the taxpayer; direct deposit is not available.

Taxpayers should be alert for suspicious or fraudulent activity during the property tax refund application period.
