Monroe Wedding Hall evacuated after flooding causes sinkhole

MONROE, CT — Emergency crews evacuated guests from the Waterview Banquet Hall in Monroe on Sunday as heavy water caused streets to collapse and create a massive sinkhole, the Connecticut Post reported.

The rising water eroded the land behind the building and, according to CT Insider, fire officials called the area a “disaster area.”

No injuries were reported and Route 34 between Route 111 and Coppermine Road remained closed Monday.

Representatives of the wedding catering hall posted on Facebook on Sunday evening in the hope of correcting a “false report” circulating on social media:

“Today’s storm caused flood damage in the garden of Waterview, but the building and the rest of the property are undamaged.

“We are so grateful for the help of our first responders and our amazing team who handled the emergency with grace despite pressure. We are praying for those in our community affected by the flooding,” Waterview officials wrote.

The priority “now is to get our garden in order and we will provide you with updates on all upcoming events,” they said.

The sinkhole at Waterview was just a fraction of the chaos that towns in southwestern Connecticut experienced on Sunday, when more than 10 inches of rain fell in a short period of time, triggering mudslides and washing away numerous roads.
