Monday Night Football: Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels – first meeting of the LSU quarterbacks in 43 years

Week 3 of the NFL season features a Monday Night Football doubleheader. First, the Jacksonville Jaguars face the Buffalo Bills at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. At 8:15 p.m. ET, the Washington Commanders face the Cincinnati Bengals away on ABC.

The Commanders-Bengals game features something NFL fans haven’t seen in decades: a duel between two former LSU quarterbacks. Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow won the Heisman Trophy and national championship with the Tigers in 2019. Washington rookie Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Trophy in 2023 before being selected No. 2 in the 2024 NFL Draft.

It is unusual for two LSU Tigers quarterbacks to compete against each other in the NFL.

LSU quarterback duels in NFL history

Monday Night Football will mark the fifth time in NFL history that two former LSU quarterbacks have faced off against each other. The previous four times were all between the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Colts in 1980 and 1981.

Those games featured former Tigers Bert Jones and David Woodley, who played for Baltimore and Miami, respectively. The two played against each other four times between 1980 and 1981, with Miami winning three of the games. In the nearly 43 years since then, the NFL has not seen two former Tiger quarterbacks face off against each other.

Daniels and Burrow are the two youngest. Here are the other 10 and the teams they played for:

  • Jones (Baltimore Colts, Los Angeles Rams)

  • Woodley (Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers)

  • Matt Flynn (Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders, Seattle Seahawks)

  • MC Reynolds (Chicago Cardinals, Washington, Buffalo Bills, Raiders)

  • Tom Hodson (New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots)

  • JaMarcus Russell (Raiders)

  • Warren Rabb (Bills, Detroit Lions)

  • Alan Risher (Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

  • Zach Mettenberger (Tennessee Titans)

2024 NFL Starting Quarterbacks from the same college

In the NFL, it is common for quarterbacks from the same college to play against each other. The last meeting was last year in the NFC Wild Card Playoffs between former Oklahoma quarterbacks Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia) and Baker Mayfield (Tampa Bay).

At the time of publication, seven colleges have multiple starting quarterbacks in the NFL:
