Mohamed Salah: Liverpool star says it is his “last year” at the club

CNN

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah said this will be his “last year” with the Reds after playing a crucial role in his team’s 3-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.

Salah, 32, scored a goal and provided two assists as Liverpool ran riot against a lackluster United at Old Trafford.

When asked what the reason was for his quick start to the new Premier League season – the Egyptian scored three goals and provided three assists in Liverpool’s first three games – Salah said he started with less pressure on his shoulders.

“I’ve had a good summer and a lot of time for myself to try to stay positive because as you know it’s my last year at the club,” Salah told Sky Sports.

“I just want to enjoy it and not think about it. I feel free to play football and then we’ll see what happens next year.”

Salah’s current contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 season. He has been with Liverpool since 2017 and has scored 160 Premier League goals during that time.

Salah scores Liverpool's third goal against Manchester United.

There have been repeated rumours in recent years that he might leave Anfield after Liverpool reportedly rejected a high-value offer from Saudi Arabia last year.

Given the open questions about his future, Salah said he had not yet spoken to the club about a possible contract extension.

“When I came into the game I said it could be the last time (that I play here with Liverpool),” he said.

“Nobody at the club has spoken to me about contracts, so I just say, ‘OK, I’m playing my last season’ and see what happens at the end of the season.

“So far we don’t know which club, but so far yes, my last game here at Liverpool. It’s not up to me, but nobody has spoken to me about a contract with the club. We’ll see.”

When asked about Salah’s comments after the game, new Liverpool coach Arne Slot said he was concentrating on the present.

“It’s a lot of ‘ifs’. At the moment he’s one of us and I’m really happy he’s one of us and he’s played really well,” Slot told reporters, according to Sky Sports.

“I don’t talk about players’ contracts, but I could talk for hours about how Mo played today.”

With his performance on Sunday, Salah continued his excellent record against Liverpool’s great rivals United.

He scored ten goals in nine appearances for Liverpool at Old Trafford. The Reds are second in the Premier League after an unbeaten start to the season, level with leaders Manchester City on nine points.
