Mobile Connectivity Committee outlines future legislation and inspects mobile infrastructure

DENVER, CO – Representative Meghan Lukens and Deputy Majority Leader Jennifer Bacon today released the following statements on Committee for Preliminary Investigation into Mobile ConnectivityThe most recent meetings. The cross-party interim committee discussed future laws and visited the mobile communications infrastructure in Lyon.

Chair Meghan Lukens, D-Steamboat Springs:

“Addressing gaps in cellular coverage is critical to the health, safety and well-being of our community members and visitors to our state. During our city outing yesterday, we were able to speak with experts about some of the challenges of cellular connectivity in Colorado and learn about some of the new technologies designed to improve coverage in densely populated areas.

“As we work to finalize legislation for next year’s legislative session and prepare for an upcoming field trip to rural areas in early September, I am deeply committed to creating a future where no one in our state will have to wonder if their cellphone can dial a number in an emergency.”

Committee member, Assistant Majority Leader Jennifer Bacon, D-Denver:

“Having reliable cell service means more than just staying connected with our loved ones; the need to call emergency services is very real. When we convened the Cell Phone Connectivity Interim Study Committee, our goal was to find ways to make cell coverage more reliable in our state, especially in underserved and rural areas.

“As we move toward drafting future legislation, our vision remains the same: to create a future where Coloradans can rely on their cell phones, regardless of their zip code.”

On Monday, August 19, committee members toured a small cell site in Lyons and the FirstNet Authority. This tour showcased a public broadband network for safety in Colorado, allowing committee members to see firsthand the infrastructure needed to provide fast, reliable cell service in densely populated areas.
