Mobile California driver’s licenses and ID cards soon available for mobile phones

Earlier this month, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that Californians would soon Multiple options to wear a mobile version of your driver’s license or government-issued identity card on mobile devices. The mobile driver’s license is mDL.

Soon, Californians will be able to choose between a safe and convenient way to store their mDLs on either Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. The new technology offers numerous possibilities to add mobile IDs iPhone, Apple Watch and Android devices. These new mobile ID options are part of the DMV’s larger mobile driver’s license (mDL) pilot program that launched last year.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said: “We are working with two legendary Californian companies – Apple and Google – provide convenient, private and secure driving licenses and identity cards directly on people’s phones. This is a big step in our efforts to better service for all Californians“Meeting people where they are and with technologies that people use every day.”

How can I register for the mDL pilot program?

To register for the free and voluntary mDL pilotyou need a smartphone and a valid, legible California driver’s license/ID card. Use your smartphone to download the CA DMV Wallet App from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

When will the mDL program officially launch?

A launch date has not yet been announced, but the August 15 announcement said the app will launch in the “coming weeks.” Mobile access is now available via the California DMV Wallet App. The new extension provides mobile access for iPhone, Apple Watch and Android devices.

Where can I use my mDL?

Mobile IDs are will not be accepted by law enforcement or government agencies So at the moment, Californians are still obliged to carry a physical card with you. Several airports, including LAX TSA, can accept them. There is also currently a only a few shops accept them for age-restricted purchases.
