    MLB playoff results, live updates: Mets take on Brewers, Tigers and Royals both win Game 1

    After a thrilling final day of the regular season in which the Braves and Mets split a doubleheader to both get into the playoffs and keep the Diamondbacks out, the four-wild card series began on Tuesday. The Tigers opened Game 1 with a win over the Astros, and the Royals followed with a win in Baltimore.

    It was a quick, low-scoring matchup in Baltimore, but the Kansas City Royals picked up their first playoff win in nearly a decade.

    Thanks to an RBI single from Bobby Witt Jr., the Royals earned a narrow 1-0 victory over the Orioles in their Game 1 at Camden Yards on Tuesday. The Royals are one step closer to their first playoff win since their World Series appearance in 2015. It was also the first postseason road shutout win in Royals franchise history.

    Cole Ragans led the Royals through six scoreless innings in Baltimore, although he was eventually sidelined by left calf cramps in the start of the seventh inning. The Royals finally scored for the first time in the sixth after Witt hit an easy RBI single to bring home Maikel Garcia.

    The Orioles nearly scored in the eighth after Gunnar Henderson walked and then Jordan Westburg hit an easy RBI single to center field, but the Royals escaped unscathed. From there, the Royals quickly closed out the ninth inning, securing their win and taking a 1-0 series lead.

    Tigers 3, Astros 1

    For the first time in 11 years, the Detroit Tigers won a playoff game, defeating the Houston Astros 3-1 on Tuesday to win Game 1 of their AL Wild Card Series.

    Behind a brilliant performance from AL Triple Crown winner Tarik Skubal — six innings pitched, four hits and no runs allowed, one walk and six strikeouts — the Tigers pounced on the Astros’ pitching early. Framber Valdez ran into trouble in the second inning, allowing a walk and four hits. Valdez exited after just 4 1/3 innings.

    The Astros didn’t go quietly, however. They threatened in the fourth when Yordan Alvarez led off with a single and walked Skubal Yainer Diaz. But back-to-back strikeouts from Jeremy Peña and Victor Caratini negated the threat. In the ninth, Alvarez hit a leadoff double and a single by Alex Bregman put runners on the corners with no one out. Yainer Diaz got the Astros on the field with an RBI single, Peña advanced runners with a sacrifice bunt and Tigers manager AJ Hinch replaced closer Jason Foley with Beau Brieske. The right-hander quickly got one out and was just one strike away from ending the game before sending Chas McCormick to load the bases. But Jason Heyward did everything he could to finish the game, and the Tigers won Game 1.

    • NYM-MIL: Brewers bullpen falters after outstanding season

      The Mets are doing damage against one of the Brewers’ biggest strengths. The Milwaukee bullpen led the NL with a 3.11 ERA this season and ranked third with 652 innings pitched, but he didn’t manage an out in that fifth inning.

    • NYM-MIL: JD Martinez scores two more points

      The Mets are still getting hits. This time JD Martinez hits an RBI single to make it 8-4 Mets. We are on our 20th offense of the game with runners in scoring position.

    • NYM-MIL: Mark Vientos gives Mets lead

      We have another lead change, this time Mark Vientos went the other way, scoring two runs and giving the Mets a 6-4 lead.

    • NYM-MIL: The Mets tie the score again with a jump into first place

      With runners on first and second, Jose Iglesias hit a grounder to first, which Rhys Hoskins followed up with a jumper, leading to a race for first place between Iglesias and reliever Joel Payamps (who came in for Freddy Peralta). . Iglesias wins with a dive and Tyrone Taylor scores second.

    • NYM-MIL: Jackson Chourio robs Starling Marte of a home run

      The youngest player in the majors is making an impression. Starling Marte hits a deep fly ball that should have tied the game, but Chourio’s glove hits right there and steals the home run.

    • NYM-MIL: Brewers take back the lead

      William Contreras scores Turang with a grounder to short. Francisco Lindor had obviously thought about staging the game at home, but initially took it easy. The inning ends one batter later with a flyout by Garrett Mitchell, with the Brewers leading 4-3.

    • NYM-MIL: Jackson Chourio equalizes for Brewers

      Jackson Chourio is 20 years old and has his first playoff RBI. After a leadoff double from fellow rookie Sal Frelick and a single from Brice Turang, Chourio hit an RBI double to tie the game. The Brewers are still threatening with runners on second and third and a shutout.

    • KC-BAL: Royals win 1-0

      And that’s enough for Kansas City. The Royals sneak a 1-0 victory, taking advantage of the early advantage in their first playoff appearance since their World Series appearance in 2015.

      It is the Royals’ first postseason road shutout win in team history.

    • NYM-MIL: Severino escapes again

      The Brewers had runners on the corners and one out, but Luis Severino escaped again with a double play off the bat of Rhys Hoskins. Still 3-2 Mets.

    • NYM-MIL: Luis Severino hits around double to maintain the 3-2 lead

      Brice Turang delivered another double to left, but Severino got flyouts from Jackson Chourio and William Contreras to preserve the lead.

    • KC-BAL: Burns out for Orioles

      Corbin Burnes will be replaced by Keegan Akin in the Orioles’ ninth game, although he’s on track to make a piece of history if they can’t contend for the win. It is also Akin’s first postseason appearance in his career.

    • KC-BAL: The Royals escape eighth

      The Orioles scored twice in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a single by Jordan Westburg, but the Royals escaped unscathed.

      They lead 1-0 in the ninth round.

    • NYM-MIL: Starling Marte gives Mets lead

      A sac fly by Starling Marte later, the Mets are up 3-2.

    • NYM-MIL: Jesse Winker equalizes with an RBI triple

      The Mets’ response didn’t take long. Jesse Winker, who started the season with the Nationals, scored a third straight goal against Peralta to tie the game. The Mets still have a runner on third and no outs.

    • NYM-MIL: Brewers get another run on RBI HBP

      With the bases loaded and two outs, Severino hit Rhys Hoskins on the hands to make it 2-0 for the Brewers. But Sal Frelick ended the inning with a groundout.
