Minnesota community uses Penetron additives to maximize lifespan of expanded wastewater treatment plant
The city continues to grow and prosper, which has recently placed a great deal of strain on the city’s infrastructure. About 80% of the raw sewage discharged into the city consists of domestic waste and the output of three local industrial plants. Melrose Wastewater Treatment Plant. The plant originally began operation in 1963 and is a three million gallons per day (MGD) Class “A” wastewater treatment plant that has since undergone several upgrades and capacity expansions, including a series of pumping stations and sewer lines to transport wastewater to the plant for treatment.
“Recent inspections revealed significant deterioration of the concrete structures of the main Melrose Plant,” noted Christopher ChenDirector of Penetron Group. “In order to meet the increasing demand for treatment capacity due to the expected population growth and the increased capacity requirements of the local industry, an expansion of the plant’s treatment capacity was necessary.”
Improving the corrosion resistance of concrete structures in wastewater treatment plants depends primarily on the optimal protection of the embedded steel reinforcement. Project engineers from Short Elliot Hendrickson (SEH) highlighted the importance of a robust waterproofing solution to protect the plant’s concrete structures from corrosion, chemical attack and long-term exposure to the aggressive environment of the wastewater.
The new upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant include a new primary treatment building (new pumps and screens), new and renovated clarifiers, new distribution structures and updated measuring equipment. The resulting increase in efficiency enabled the Melrose Plant with additional treatment capacity of 500,000 gallons per day.
Worms Lumber & Ready Mix, the ready-mix concrete supplier, has added PENETRON ADMIX SB to the concrete mix for the plant’s new concrete structures.
“PENETRON ADMIX SB was selected against a range of competing additives as the best product for improving concrete impermeability and extending the life of the expanded Melrose facility,” adds Christopher Chen. “The ease of dosing with soluble sachets and the technical support throughout the project also contributed to the decision to use Penetron.”
