Out of Napoleon Dynamite Director Jared Hess, the upcoming film titled A Minecraft moviefeatures an all-star cast including Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (The colour purple), Wednesday Stars: Emma Myers and Jennifer Coolidge.
The film is an adaptation of Mojang Studios’ best-selling video game, which was first released in 2009 and has sold over 300 million copies, with nearly 140 million monthly active players.
A Minecraft movie welcomes viewers to a world “where creativity not only helps you create, but is essential to survival!” says an official description.
“Four outsiders – Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks) – are struggling with everyday problems when they are suddenly drawn through a mysterious portal into the upper world: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.”
To return home, they must “master this world (and also protect it from evil things like piglins and zombies) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, skilled craftsman, Steve (Black).”
Scenes in the first teaser, released on Wednesday (September 4), show the four adventurers entering the overworld; a pink goat, a wolf howling in the night, and an army of pigs.
Although Hess retained the game’s distinctive geometric block shape for the landscape and CGI animals, some fans lamented the fact that the film is not animated.
“This should have been animated, not real,” one person tweeted, while a second declared, “Oh this is getting so bad.”

“IT LOOKS HORRIBLE,” agreed a third.
“Anyone could have guessed this, but this is clearly a movie made by people whose kids play Minecraft, not someone who actually plays Minecraft,” argued another.
“I wasn’t expecting much from a live-action Minecraft movie, but this isn’t it,” added one, while another commented, “This looks worse than I imagine a Minecraft movie to be.”
A Minecraft movie is scheduled to hit theaters on April 4, 2025.
This is not the first time that live-action adaptations of popular video games have faced harsh criticism.
The year 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog The film was forced to redesign its version of the eponymous star after fans criticized the first design, which showed Sonic with eerily human eyes and teeth, elongated legs, and a human-like torso.
Director Jeff Fowler thanked fans for their “support and criticism” and promised to redesign the character while delaying the film’s release by three months.
