Michigan’s Attorney General warns Republicans: “You can rip this wedding ring out of my cold, dead, gay hand.”

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel did not mince her words when she spoke on stage at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday.

The Democratic leader praised Vice President Kamala Harris for “refusing to defend a ban on same-sex marriage in California,” according to MSNBC, while taking a swipe at Republicans – and conservative U.S. Supreme Court justices – who want to restrict LGBTQ+ rights.

Addressing those present at the DNC convention, Nessel said: “By the way, I have a message for the Republicans and the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court: You can rip this wedding ring out of my cold, dead, gay hand.”

According to the Michigan Advance, Nessel met with LGBTQ+ rights organizations at the state Democratic Party headquarters in June “to raise awareness of the threats they believe LGBTQ+ citizens in Michigan face if Republicans come to power.”

According to the report, “their shared message was that while Michigan’s LGBTQ+ rights would be rolled back if Republicans returned to power, they would be particularly at risk if former President Donald Trump were allowed to return to the Oval Office.”

Nessel told attendees, “I don’t know if I’m the only one who remembers what it was like when Donald Trump was president of the United States. I remember that, and that’s actually one of the reasons I ran for attorney general of this state, because I wanted to counter Trump’s homophobic, transphobic, very hateful agenda.”
