Michigan was an early underdog in the national title rematch against Washington

Nearly 10 months after Michigan played Washington in the College Football Playoff, the roles have reversed in the eyes of oddsmakers.

The 10th-ranked Wolverines are slight underdogs heading into Saturday’s national championship game rematch in Seattle (7:30 p.m. ET, NBC), a sign of the times for a 4-1 Michigan team that’s barely scraping by.

As of Sunday night, Washington was a consensus favorite across the market, with sportsbooks listing the Huskies between a 1.5-point favorite and a 2.5-point favorite thanks to long playing time and strong home-field advantage.

A consensus score of 40.5 can also be found almost everywhere, suggesting a lower scoring game could be in the works.

Michigan earned a 27-24 win over Minnesota in which it failed to cover a 10.5-point lead, dropping the Wolverines to 1-4 on the season. Their only cover came against USC when, as underdogs, they not only stayed within the 4-point range, but also won the game outright.

Washington (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) lost 21-18 at Rutgers on Friday. The Huskies are 2-3 ATS this season with all five games finishing under the total score.

In January, Michigan defeated Washington 34-13 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, to win the program’s first national title since 1997. The Wolverines entered the race as 5.5-point favorites.
