Michigan State Spartans vs. Ohio State Buckeyes football

Defense forces three and out

After another near Ohio State turnover, Michigan State gets a huge third down stop. There is 1:48 and two timeouts left for the offense to somehow make this game a score.

Sales…….

Frustrating isn’t a strong enough word for the Spartans right now. Against the third-ranked team in the country, Michigan State came within 200 yards of just seven points in the first half. But three empty red zone trips have the Spartans down 10.

Ohio State responds quickly

That happened quickly. Ohio State answered the Spartan score in four plays with a 75-yard touchdown drive. Jeremiah Smith scored the final point, increasing his points total early on. He’s a good guy.

MSU touchdown!

Welcome back, Jaron Glover. He scored on the first play of the drive, bringing his total to four catches and 53 yards. Chiles is now 6/6. The offense moves the ball extremely well and could be in an even better situation than they were at 10-7 with one or two fewer mistakes. Great answer.

INT prepares Spartans well

Woah! Jordan Turner just had a big moment. He grabs Will Howard and sends him back to the Ohio State 20. The offense must capitalize.

Once again the turnover problem arises

At least it wasn’t an interception. Right? For the second time that night, the Spartans again got the ball well into the red zone before Jack Velling recovered a fumble after a long catch and run. Ohio State will take the lead at 19.

Ohio State converts on 4th-and-goal

After two close turnover calls on second and third down, Ohio State tried on fourth down and finally got it into the end zone. Howard found Aaron Scott Jr. for a score. Ohio State now leads 10-0 early in the second quarter.

The first quarter ends with OSU’s position

If MSU has a chance tonight, they will have to come up big in the redzone. Ohio State is back deep in Spartan territory with the second quarter approaching.

The Spartans drive, but come away empty-handed

This was fun until it wasn’t. Michigan State marched right down the field behind a big run from Nate Carter and some nice completions from Aidan Chiles. The Spartans faced a 4th-and-1 at the Ohio State 20 and Chiles was caught on a QB sneak. It seemed like a chance to seize the momentum early, but they couldn’t capitalize on it.

Michigan State bends, doesn’t break

Ohio State continued to roll on its first drive until a 15-yard penalty forced the Buckeyes back out of the redzone and stalled the drive. Ohio State settled for three points, but the offense didn’t seem to encounter much resistance from Michigan State. Ohio State University quarterback Will Howard had a 7/7 performance on the first drive. If that continues, it could be a long night for the Spartans.

Ohio State ball, Spartans D first

Spartan Stadium is loud! The defense hopes it stays that way.

Michigan State jumps back into Big Ten play this weekend, returning home to face undefeated Ohio State, ranked No. 3 nationally.

The Spartans ended the non-conference portion of their schedule with a loss at Boston College. With its Week 2 win at Maryland, Michigan State started conference play on the right foot. This will be Ohio State’s first Big Ten game.

A big part of the story at Michigan State this past weekend was injuries, particularly on offense. The depleted receiver room will be replenished this week with starting wideout Jaron Glover back in the lineup, while the decision on standout deep threat Nick Marsh won’t be made until the game. If there is any chance of pulling off an upset, the Spartans will need more healthy playmakers than were available to them at Boston College.

Michigan State will honor Mark Dantonio, the winningest football coach in program history, during Saturday night’s game. A packed crowd and a charged atmosphere are expected in East Lansing.
