Michael Keaton played Batman in the canceled Batgirl movie, but isn’t upset that the film was shelved. Why he “didn’t care either way”
The superhero genre continues to dominate pop culture, both on television and in film. There are a number of shared universes, including the DCEU, which ended with Aquaman 2. Fans are still unpacking this franchise (which streams with a Max subscription), including the scrapped Batgirl film. Michael Keaton played Batman in that project, but isn’t upset that the film was shelved, recently explaining why he “didn’t care either way.” Let’s break it all down.
Fans were thrilled when it was announced that Keaton would reprise his role as Batman in The Flash as well as Batgirl. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. dropped the project after filming in exchange for a big tax break. Fans have been complaining about this for months, and Michael Keaton recently spoke to Variety about his perspective, saying:
Points were scored. Because while fans are still pondering the fact that they have Batgirl Keaton got paid anyway, and that’s why he’s not quite as upset about the studio’s decision to drop the superhero movie after it was already shot.
Keaton’s comments are in contrast to the views of others who have Batgirl Film. Directors Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi expressed how The Flash made her sad that her DC film with Keaton might never see the light of day. Later in the same interview, Keaton spoke about his love for the filmmakers, saying:
You can’t say the man isn’t being honest. Michael Keaton has been in the film business for decades and has undoubtedly experienced his fair share of disappointments in that time. And it seems as though as long as the check keeps cashing, he’ll stay away from projects like these. Batgirl.
Not only has Keaton reprised his role as Batman in two recent DC films, but he has also made a habit of reprising his legendary roles for new projects. A typical example: the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Film. Fortunately, this sequel will definitely be released in theaters and will not suffer the same fate as Batgirl.
The opportunities of Batgirl The likelihood of a film ever being released became even lower after the end of the DCEU. James Gunn and Peter Safran are creating a brand new shared universe, with the first slate of projects titled Gods and Monsters. We should get a new Bat-family in this universe, so there is even less need, Batgirl to the people.
The DCU begins with Superman on July 11, 2025. In the meantime, check out the movie release dates for 2025.
