Michael Keaton of “Beetlejuice 2” explains what improvements it offers over the first film

Beetlejuice – Beetlejuice star Michael Keaton has explained how the sequel is an improvement over its predecessor, describing some moments as “delightful.”

The sequel, which comes 36 years after the original, follows the title character (Keaton) as he reconnects with Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), who is trying to save her teenage daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega).

Ahead of the film’s release next month (September 6), Keaton, Ryder and Justin Theroux – who plays Lydia’s husband Rory – spoke to Total Film to reveal details of the long-awaited sequel. Keaton explained that the film is an improvement on the 1987 film.

“(It has) a stronger story,” he began (via GamesRadar). “There are more connections for the audience in terms of the other characters. There are things here that I wasn’t prepared for that are beyond delightful. Rather than saying, ‘I can’t wait for this thing to show up,’ or ‘I just want this thing called Beetlejuice to go crazy.'”

In addition to the aforementioned quartet of stars, the cast of Tim Burton’s latest film also includes Catherine O’Hara, Monica Bellucci, Burn Gornam, Danny DeVito, Arthur Conti and Willem Dafoe, the latter of whom recently hinted at his role as a jaded movie star who becomes a detective.

“I haven’t seen any footage yet, but it was fun. I play a cop in the afterlife, so I’m a dead person,” he told Variety. “And in life I was a B-movie action star, but I had an accident and that brought me to the other side.”

“But because of my abilities, I became a detective character in the afterlife. So that’s my job. But it’s shaped by the fact of who I was (when I was alive): a B-movie action star,” added the star, whose character is named Wolf Jackson.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be in theaters on September 6th.
