Miami Hurricanes Football: Stats, stats, stats before Week 4

Miami looks to make it’s second consecutive 4-0 start to the season when it travels to USF to take on the University of South Florida at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 21. Kickoff for Miami’s final nonconference game of the year is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN.

But before we look ahead, let’s take a look back at some important statistics.

But enough of the platitudes, let’s get to the point:

Pioneer

No quarterback in the FBS has thrown more touchdowns than Cam Ward, who leads the national list with 11 touchdowns. Cam Ward is Miami’s first quarterback to throw for 300 yards and three or more touchdowns in his first three starts of the year since Miami joined the ACC in 2004.

Historic victory

Miami’s 750 yards of offense against Ball State were the most in a game in program history, surpassing the previous record set against Central Connecticut State (739) in 2020. The 62-0 victory was the most lopsided clean sheet against an FBS opponent in school history – the previous record was a 61-0 victory against Rutgers in 2001.

Energy with a capital “D”

Miami leads the nation in third down defense, with a minuscule 14.7% success rate against its opponents. Miami limited Ball State to just 115 yards on offense and held the Cardinals to a measly six yards on the ground. The Hurricanes’ defense allowed just 25 yards rushing in the 2nd half.

The Hurricanes’ secondary lost four of five starters from last season, including both safeties (Kam Kinchens, James Williams), a starting cornerback (Jaden Davis) and their starting nickel (Te’Cory Couch). Despite the personnel losses, Miami ranks as the best secondary in pass coverage (92.2 points) according to PFF.

Record holder

With a four-catch, 104-yard performance against Florida A&M, WR Xavier Restrepo jumped into the top 10 of Miami’s all-time receiving yards list. Restrepo needs 153 yards to pass No. 9 Phillip Dorsett (2,132), 167 to pass No. 8 Travis Benjamin (2,146), 179 to pass No. 7 Mike Harley (2,158) and 181 to pass No. 6 Leonard Hankerson (2,160) on the all-time receiving yards list.

With 239 more yards, he would overtake Stacy Coley (2,218) and move into the top 5 in program history.

Hard Rock Central

Miami has a perfect 3-0 record in the series in Tampa and a 5-1 overall lead.

**Bonus**

Miami ranks No. 1 nationally in plays of 20 or more yards (32) and No. 4 in plays of 10 or more yards (66). Of the plays of 20 or more yards, 26 are passes. Of the 66 plays of 10 or more yards, 49 are passes. The Hurricanes have had just 48 pass plays of 20 or more yards and 129 pass plays of 10 or more yards in 2023.
