MGOLF finishes 14th at nightfall in Fighting Illini Invitational

OLYMPIA Fields, Illinois – Since there was still a group on the field, the Fighting Illini game was stopped on Saturday evening due to darkness, so Baylor had to play in 14th Location.

With rain threatening to cancel play on Sunday, the teams attempted to play 36 holes on Saturday, and they managed to get all but one group through. However, Baylor finished its third round with Zach Heffernan He led the Bears with a 1-over 211 and finished the day in 21st place. At the time of the stoppage, Arizona State’s Jose Luis Ballester was one stroke ahead of Georgia Tech’s Benjamin Reuter, both of whom had to finish the final round.

Georgia Tech leads Arizona State by two strokes when the teams resume play Sunday morning.

THE RUNDOWN
Second round

Heffernan battled his way to a 3-over 38 with four pars, two birdies, two bogeys and a triple bogey on hole 18 on his first nine holes. On his second nine holes, the senior settled down with a bogey-free front and birdies on holes 1 and 4 for a 1-over 71.

Jonas Appel continued his solid play in round two with a 1-over 36 on his first nine holes, including a birdie on hole 11 and bogeys on holes 12 and 17. His first nine holes consisted of eight pars and a bogey on hole 7, leaving him at 1-over 36.

Vincent Stjernfeldt continued his solid play in his first appearance on the BU team with a 3-over 73 in round two. After playing his first seven holes at 4-over, the freshman made a birdie on hole 17 to enter at 3-over. He played a solid half with a bogey on hole 6 but a birdie on hole 7 that got him back on his feet.

Drew Wrightson improved his first round by five strokes with a 3-over 73 on Saturday morning. A bogey on hole 14 and a double bogey on hole 15 put him at 3-over after seven holes. The junior, however, responded and played his last 12 holes with even par, a birdie on hole 1 and a bogey on hole 9.

Davis Ovard In the second round on Saturday morning, he shot 9 over par, 79. He rebounded from a bogey on the first hole of the day with three consecutive birdies to finish 2 under par. From that point on, he shot 11 over par on his final 14 holes.

Last round

Heffernan shot a career-best round of 66 on Saturday afternoon. He started strong with 32 shots (3 under par) on his first nine holes. He improved his round to 5 under par with two birdies on holes 1 and 2 before making his first bogey of the round on hole 3. He came back with a birdie on hole 5 but ended the day with a bogey on hole 8 to finish 4 under par.

Jonas Appel ended his weekend with a draw of 48th after a 5-over 75 in the final round. He played his first five holes at 5-over par, but managed a birdie before the turn on hole 15. Appel finished the weekend with two bogeys on holes 5 and 7.

Vincent Stjernfeldt was tied at 65th at the time of the suspension in his first tournament as a member of the Baylor team. After a couple of early bogeys on holes 12 and 13, he came back with a birdie on hole 15 to turn things around at 1 over par. He finished the weekend with a 4 over par 39 on his back nine.

Davis Ovard finished 76th at the time of the suspension. The sophomore shot 4-over 39 on his first nine holes and improved by one stroke to 3-over 38 on his second nine holes.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Heffernan now has eight rounds in the 60s in his career, including a 67 or better in two of the last four events
  • Heffernan finished his weekend with the second-best par-5 scoring average (4.33).
  • Appel’s 40 pars were the third most in the field at the time of the interruption.
