Mexico and Canada fail to convince in draw; USMNT draws against New Zealand

All of the major CONCACAF teams were in action Tuesday night as the United States took on New Zealand and Mexico faced Canada. Here’s what happened.

Mexico – Canada 0:0

At the end of the international break, Mexico and Canada played a goalless draw in Dallas without any exciting goal-scoring scenes.

The first 45 minutes were anything but classic moments, as neither team got a grip on the ball and created real scoring opportunities.

Mexico had the best chance of the game after the break when Santi Giménez got behind the Canadian defense, but the striker was unable to fire the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.

After an impressive win over the USA last time out, Canada was unable to impress this time, while Mexico, on the other hand, continues to struggle to regain its footing in CONCACAF.

USA – New Zealand 1:1

Goalscorers: Pulisic 69′; Ben Waine 89′

Although the USA had more possession and scoring opportunities, they only managed a draw in a friendly against New Zealand in Cincinnati.

For the first 45 minutes, the United States dominated every aspect of the game except where it mattered most – putting the ball in the net.

Ricardo Pepi looked to have put the USA ahead when he fired a swift shot into the bottom corner, but a late foul by the linesman resulted in the goal being disallowed.

As was often lamented in the final days of the Gregg Berhalter era, the Stars and Stripes often managed to get the ball into the dangerous zone after the break, but the final pass or finish always seemed to be missing.

It seemed as if all that was missing was a little stardust. After being substituted on after about an hour, Christian Pulisic opened the scoring with a fine finish from inside the penalty area.

The home team’s luck was spoiled in the final minutes when a deflected shot from a New Zealand counterattack eluded the onrushing Matt Turner and bounced just over the goalkeeper’s head into the net, securing a draw for the visitors.
