Mets player Francisco Lindor breaks Blue Jays no-hitter with home run in ninth inning

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor broke Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis’ no-hit attempt in the ninth inning in MVP-worthy fashion: with a home run that tied the game at 1-1.

Francis didn’t allow a single hit in eight innings at the Rogers Centre, with the only blemish being a walk to Mets outfielder Starling Marte in the fifth inning. Francis struck out just one batter and threw 111 pitches with 68 strikes.

But Lindor, the Mets’ MVP candidate, came to bat first in the ninth inning and hit a 398-foot home run to right field with the score 0-2. Francis was replaced by reliever Chad Green, who played for years with the New York Yankees.

Lindor has a batting average of .268/.339/.492 with 31 home runs and 85 RBIs this season. He entered the game leading the National League in Fangraphs WAR at 7.2, ahead of Shohei Ohtani, the frontrunner for MVP. Ohtani has a 6.8 WAR with 46 home runs and 101 RBIs. His batting average is .290/.373/.612.

Dave Stieb threw the only no-hitter in Blue Jays history on September 2, 1990 in Cleveland.

The only scary moment came in the sixth inning, when New York’s Harrison Bader opened the inning with a drive to deep left field, but Toronto’s Davis Schneider made a great catch on the wall.

Lindor then hit a line drive to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base.

Guerrero also caught a soft linebacker from Jose Iglesias in the fourth inning and Brandon Nimmo hit a hard linebacker to right field in the fifth inning.

Francis pitched a no-hitter against the Los Angeles Angels on August 24 until the ninth inning before Taylor Ward hit a home run early in the inning.

Francis was named AL Pitcher of the Month for August when he went 4-1 with a 1.05 ERA, striking out 39 and walking four in six appearances, five starts.

There have been four no-hitters in the majors this season. The Chicago Cubs threw a combined no-hitter against Pittsburgh last Wednesday, following complete efforts by Houston’s Ronel Blanco against Toronto on April 1, San Diego’s Dylan Cease in Washington on July 25 and San Francisco’s Blake Snell in Cincinnati on Aug. 2.

The Mets have gone eight times without a hit. The last pitcher to do so was Max Scherzer on October 3, 2015 against Washington.
