Mets-Braves doubleheader: Braves join Mets in postseason with win in Game 2, Diamondbacks eliminated

The New York Mets and Atlanta Braves are both in the MLB playoffs. The Mets punched their ticket with a wild 8-7 win over the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of Monday’s doubleheader.

The Braves followed with a 3-0 win in Game 2, securing their spot in the postseason. This means that the reigning NL champion Arizona Diamondbacks are out of the playoffs. The Diamondbacks needed one of the Braves or Mets on Sunday to overtake them and clinch baseball’s final postseason spot.

The two games played on Monday were postponed last week because of Hurricane Helene, which caused some chaos in the MLB playoffs ahead of the start of the Wild Card Series on Tuesday.

The Braves secured the No. 5 seed with Monday’s win and will face the No. 4 seed San Diego Padres in the wild card round. The No. 6 seed Mets will face the No. 3 seed Milwaukee Brewers.

  • Carlos Mendoza Clubhouse Celebration Speech

The Mets popped the champagne after both games of their doubleheader were completed on Monday. It probably would have been difficult to celebrate like that after Game 1 and play another game 45 minutes later.

  • The Braves go 3-0 and return to the postseason for the seventh straight season

Raisel Iglesias rounds out the 3-0 victory for the Braves, who with the win will clinch a spot in the NL wild-card playoffs and be the No. 5 seed in the postseason.

Jose Iglesias led off with a single, but was negated by a double-play grounder by Brandon Nimmo. Pete Alonso made a groundout to shortstop to end the game.

The Mets will take the No. 6 pick. And the Diamondbacks are knocked out of the postseason list by Atlanta’s win.

  • Mets have been scoreless for 8 innings

Joe Jiménez beat the Mets with 11 pitches in the 8th inning, retiring Luis Torrens, Eddy Alvarez and Luisangel Acuña.

Two hits in 8 innings for the Mets. Things aren’t looking good for the Arizona Diamondbacks’ postseason chances.

  • The Braves take a 3-0 lead in the seventh game

Huascar Brazoban takes over to pitch in the 7th inning.

After a leadoff walk to Sean Murphy, Brazoban picked off Orlando Arcia and Michael Harris II. But Ozzie Albies recovers from a throwing error by Brazoban and throws the ball near third base.

Marcell Ozuna followed with a single that scored Murphy and Albies.

Matt Olson then hits a single, but is thrown out on the second attempt to extend a double, ending the inning.

    Braves 3, Mets 0

  • Mets are still scoreless

Reynaldo Lopez pitched the 7th inning for the Braves, retiring all three batters with two strikeouts.

Mets have 2 hits and no runs in 7 innings.

  • 6 innings, 1 run, 2 hits for Joey Lucchesi

After 111 pitches, Joey Lucchesi appears to be exhausted due to the hugs in the Mets dugout.

Remember, he didn’t get the starting nod until after the Mets won Game 1 of that doubleheader. After securing an NL wild card playoff bid, New York ousted Luis Severino in the postseason opener.

  • The Braves threaten but fail to score in the 6th

Jorge Soler hit his second double of the game against Joey Lucchesi. Eli White came in to pinch run for Soler and moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Ramón Laureano. But Lucchesi escapes by tricking Gio Urshela into flying left.

Lucchesi has allowed one run and two hits in six innings, including four walks with four strikeouts.

    Braves 1, Mets 0 after 6 innings.

  • Dylan Lee is ranked sixth for Braves

Dylan Lee allowed a single to Brandon Nimmo but got Pete Alonso to ground to third base on his first pitch.

  • Pitching change for the Braves

After Daysbel Hernandez hits Eddy Alvarez with a pitch, he strikes out Luisangel Acuña and Jose Iglesias. But Dylan Lee will now take over for Atlanta to pitch to Brandon Nimmo, who hit a 2-run home run in Game 1.

  • 5th inning: Braves 1, Mets 0

Joey Lucchesi pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning for the Mets, retiring all three batters he faced.

After 93 pitches it could be for the left-hander. He allowed one run and two hits and also threw four walks with four strikeouts.

Lucchesi was called up for this start from Triple-A Syracuse. After winning Game 1 of that doubleheader and clinching a postseason berth, the Mets held off Luis Severino to present their NL Wild Card opener.

  • Daysbel Hernandez of the Braves escapes with no runs allowed

Daysbel Hernandez came on to replace Grant Holmes, who put the first two batters on base in the fifth inning. Hernandez then struck out Tyrone Taylor and Harrison Bader before giving Luis Torrens a groundout. No runs allowed after the Mets had two ons with no outs.

Braves 1, Mets 0 in the bottom of the 5th.

  • Pete Alonso gets the Mets’ first hit

Grant Holmes finally allows his first hit of the game, giving up a single to Pete Alonso.

Grant Holmes had virtually no time to think about starting the second game, which the Braves desperately need to win. Half an hour before the start of the game he was informed that he would be in the starting eleven.

    Via Mark Bowman of MLB.com:

The start against the Reds was on September 19th. Sale pitched five innings, allowing two runs and five hits.

  • Scoreless 2nd inning for Grant Holmes

Grant Holmes got through the 2nd inning in 10 pitches, creating another hitless, scoreless frame. He may not be Chris Sale, but his first two innings were very good.
