Metallica will play a concert in Syracuse for the first time in nearly 30 years

For the first time in nearly 30 years, a legendary metal band is coming to Syracuse.

Metallica will perform at the JMA Wireless Dome on the campus of Syracuse University on Saturday, April 19, 2025, as part of the band’s M72 world tour. Special guests Pantera and Suicidal Tendencies will open the show at 6 p.m.

The concert will be Metallica’s first-ever performance at the former Carrier Dome and the band’s first visit to Syracuse since 1996. It will also be Metallica’s only concert in New York State.

Tickets go on sale Friday, September 27th at 10am through Ticketmaster. According to Live Nation, the stage will be in the center of the dome, seating will be available throughout the stadium, and there will be a standing “snake pit” in the middle of the stage area. Prices have not yet been announced.

Due to high demand, fans may also want to look for tickets through resellers such as VividSeats, StubHub, TicketNetwork or SeatGeek.

Metallica is a thrash metal/heavy metal band from California, currently consisting of singer and guitarist James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, bassist Robert Trujillo and guitarist Kirk Hammett. The group has won 10 Grammy Awards, been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is one of the most successful music acts of all time, having sold more than 125 million albums worldwide.

Metallica’s hits include songs such as “Enter Sandman,” “Until It Sleeps,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Whiskey in the Jar,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “The Memory Remains,” and “Master of Puppets.” The band released their eleventh studio album, “72 Seasons,” last year.

According to their website, Metallica has only performed in Syracuse four times: in 1986 and 1989 at the War Memorial and in 1994 and 1996 (headlining Lollapalooza) at the New York State Fairgrounds. Metallica also played at Woodstock ’99 in Rome, NY, and most recently visited upstate New York for a 2022 performance at the Buffalo Bills’ Highmark Stadium.

Metallica joins a long list of music legends who have performed at the JMA Dome, formerly the Carrier Dome, including Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, The Who and Bruce Springsteen. Pop singer Pink will bring her spectacular performance to the venue on Sunday, October 6.

Some fans may be hoping for a surprise reunion in the Dome: Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted bought a house on Skaneateles Lake for $6.1 million in 2020. Newsted was a member of the band from 1986 to 2001 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Metallica in 2009.
