With playoff positioning on the line, the Phoenix Mercury will look to slow down the Seattle Storm, and Jewel Loyd in particular. Unfortunately for them, our WNBA expert believes Loyd can score at will, which is why she’s the focus of tonight’s game.
The WNBA has just one game on the schedule tonight, and it should be a good game between two playoff franchises as the Phoenix Mercury face the Seattle Storm for the third time this season.
My Mercury vs. Storm predictions and WNBA picks predict that Seattle defenseman Jewell Loyd will play a major scoring role when the Mercury face the Storm on Saturday, September 7.
Mercury vs Storm Predictions
My best bet
Jewell Loyd Over 19.5 points (-115 at DraftKings)
My analysis
The WNBA season is coming to a close and we have a good matchup between two playoff teams on Saturday night where we hope to get something done in these final days.
In the WNBA, playoff placement is important and the fifth-seeded Seattle Storm have a handful of games left on their schedule to catch the fourth-seeded Las Vegas Aces in the standings.
That means tonight’s game against the Phoenix Mercury is important, which means Storm’s leading scorer Jewell Loyd will have to have a great night.
Loyd is one of the best scorers in the WNBA, but she’s having a tough time. Loyd has failed to score 20+ in four of her nine games since the break, but tonight she’s in a good position against a porous Mercury backcourt stopping unit.
Opposing guards have shot 49% from the field and 34% from beyond the arc since the break, which amounts to a whopping 56 points per night and bodes well for Loyd that he can break his scoring drought.
Tonight’s clash is a must-win for the Storm, and Loyd is their best point scorer. Loyd is coming off a rough road streak, but she has scored over 20 points in three of her last five home games, and with the Mercury defense giving up a lot of points to defenders since the break, I expect Loyd to bounce back tonight.
Mercury vs. Storm – Same Game Accumulator (SGP)
Loyd getting 20+ points doesn’t mean it’s going to be a high-scoring game, and I don’t expect one tonight.
I expect a slow, low-scoring game tonight. Both groups are in the bottom half of the pace table, and Phoenix averages just 78 points a night on the road. The Storm’s defense has been strong, but their inconsistent offense has led to an over/under record of 14-19-1.
