Mercedes Moné: Vince McMahon said crazy things to me before I left WWE

While she premieres a highly anticipated documentary series later this week about the man still associated with her old company, Netflix is undertaking a comprehensive press campaign for her new venture, and Mercedes Moné is once again speaking out about her exit from WWE.

It came up during the former Sasha Banks’ visit to New York’s Power 105.1 FM today (September 25) to chat with the station’s popular morning show. Asked by The Breakfast Club Team why she left WWE, the reigning AEW TBS & New Japan Strong Women’s Champion said:

“I left for a lot of different reasons. A lot of personal things happened to me and the chairman at the time. I didn’t like the way he spoke to me and how condescending he was to me. I thought to myself, ‘It’s time to really listen to your soul and your heart.’ One day, a light bulb went off in my head and I left WWE.”

WWE Chairman when she and Naomi left the Raw In May 2022, Vince McMahon, the subject of the Netflix documentary mentioned above, Mr McMahon.

Charlemagne asked shortly afterwards if McMahon had said crazy things to Mercedes and she replied:

“Yeah, a little crazy. He talked to me a little crazy that day… It was enough for my light source to come into my body and say, ‘If you stay – this is not OK.’ And so, you know what? ‘If you stay, this is not OK. This is for the rest of your life. What are you going to teach your children? What are you going to teach people if you feel like this after 10 years here? You have to stand up for yourself.’ And that’s what I did.”

Moné told DJ Envy that at the time, there was “no protection” for wrestlers from such treatment, “but we’re changing that every day.” She also said that she and Naomi not only went to WWE’s human resources department to discuss their interactions with McMahon that day, but “went to everyone – but no.”

Perhaps that’s why Moné was reluctant to return to WWE one day for the right offer (and now it’s under new management). However, she didn’t rule it out…

“After the way AEW treated me, I don’t know. I don’t think so.

“I feel like I have the best relationship with AEW right now, and that’s true – I’m living my dreams and it’s the best place I’ve ever been mentally and physically. To be able to have new dreams after 14 years in the industry – that’s the best feeling in the world, so AEW is my home right now.”

You can listen to Mercedes’ entire conversation with DJ Envy, Charlemagne and Loren Lorosa on The Breakfast Club in the video embedded at the top of this post.
