Memphis Police Chief Shot Multiple Times, Suspect Wanted for Attempted Murder

The Texas Rangers are searching for an attempted cop murderer in Hall County.

Seth Altman is accused of shooting Memphis Police Chief Rex Plant.

Plant and one of his officers went to the Memphis Housing Authority to arrest Altman on a burglary charge around 11 p.m. Thursday.

This was announced by the Ministry of Public Security ABC 7 News The officer went to the front door of Altman’s apartment while Plant went to the back door.

As Plant approached the back door, Altman came out, pulled out a gun, shot Plant several times and ran.

Plant was flown to University Medical Center in Lubbock, where he is in stable condition.

Sheriff’s deputies from Hall, Carson, Donley and Wheeler counties participated in the manhunt along with DPS troopers and Texas Game Wardens.

Law enforcement used drones and K-9s in their search.

Altman is described as a 33-year-old white male, 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 220 pounds, with red hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt and blue jeans.

He is considered armed and dangerous. If you see Altman, don’t approach him. Call 911.

Plant was hired by the city of Memphis last year.

DPS issued a Blue Alert Friday morning.

Blue Alerts are intended to expedite the apprehension of “violent criminals who kill or seriously injure local, state or federal law enforcement officers.”

  • A police officer must have been killed or seriously injured by a perpetrator.
  • The investigating law enforcement agency must determine that the perpetrator poses a serious danger or threat to the public and other law enforcement personnel.
  • A detailed description of the offender’s vehicle, vehicle trailer or partial trailer must be available for public broadcast.
  • The appropriate investigating law enforcement agency must recommend activation of the Blue Alert to DPS.

The Blue Alert was launched on August 18, 2008, when Governor Rick Perry signed Executive Order RP-68.

Due to the shooting and manhunt, Memphis ISD schools will be held late until 10 a.m. “out of an abundance of caution.”
