HOUSTON – The Detroit Tigers have finalized their 26-man MLB playoff roster for the American League wild-card series against the Houston Astros, which begins Tuesday (2:32 p.m., ABC).

There weren’t really many surprises on the Tigers’ roster for the wild card round, as pitchers Kenta Maeda and Keider Montero were left off the Series roster just days after pitching in the season finale with the Astros.

Jackson Jobe, the MLB’s top pitching prospect, has made the Tigers’ roster. Jobe, a dynamic 22-year-old right-hander and the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, made his major league debut on Wednesday and pitched four scoreless innings in relief in two games.

In addition to Jobe, several other rookies who appeared to be on the bubble were on the final wild-card list, including right-hander Justyn-Henry Malloy, left-handed third baseman Jace Jung and right-handed pitcher Ty Madden.

More than anything, Tigers manager AJ Hinch wants a collection of position players that will allow him to mix and match, using pinch hitters, moving players all over the field when necessary, and trying to do it all while hitting his best to get out of everyone. of three matchup against the Astros.

And he wants pitchers who can be used in creative, unpredictable ways.

Tarik Skubal will start Game 1 on Tuesday, but Hinch hasn’t said what his pitching plan will be after that.

“To give you a quick overview, our plan is to play Tarik Skubal (Tuesday) and throw havoc the rest of the way, just like it has been the last two months,” Hinch said Monday afternoon during his press conference on Minute Maid Park. “Our players are buying in.”

Meanwhile, former Tigers ace Justin Verlander was not added to the Astros’ wild-card squad, eliminating the possibility of a playoff matchup with his former team.

Teams are allowed to promote a maximum of 13 pitchers and can change their roster before each series in the playoffs if they advance.
