McDowell Mountain Regional Park closed due to forest fire near Fountain Hills

FOUNTAIN HILLS, AZ (AZFamily) – A wildfire prompted county authorities to close McDowell Mountain Regional Park Wednesday afternoon. The fire will remain closed while emergency crews work to fully contain it.

The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management said the McDowell Fire burned 90 acres and was 20% contained as of 5:20 p.m.

It is burning at the northwest end of the park and has spread east and west before further advancement was stopped.

All firefighters have been withdrawn from the front lines for the night but will be back Thursday morning to take over firefighting and secure the fire perimeter, officials said.

According to ADFFM, emergency services initially carried out an air strike, but firefighters on the ground quickly got around the fire.

The flames were stopped in many places by hiking trails and flushing, firefighters said.

The fire does not threaten any houses or buildings.

No injuries were reported.

It is unclear what started the flames.
