McDonald’s customers boo its new Halloween buckets: “strong pass”

Customers aren’t thrilled with the new monster-themed buckets.

A spooky tradition at the Golden Arches is finally back.

On October 1st, McDonald’s announced the return of its Happy Meal Boo Buckets and the reaction on social media was decidedly mixed.

Customers will be able to purchase the trick-or-treat buckets at participating McDonald’s locations across the U.S. starting October 15. This year, the brand says the buckets are getting “a refresh” with new monster designs in white, orange and green and blue – last year’s lineup included a purple vampire.

This year, bucket owners can customize their container with themed stickers, in what McDonald’s calls a “truly monstrous makeover.” All four bucket designs are available while supplies last.

McDonald’s has been handing out Boo buckets to children and nostalgia-hungry adults since 1986. The buckets have been updated several times over the years, from the original trio of orange designs to witches, ghosts, skeletons, mummy and more.

Previous versions of Boo Buckets came with lids, which have become an aspect of the holiday item that social media users remember.

Across Instagram, X and TikTok, people responded to this year’s designs with overwhelming displeasure, flooding the comment sections of several posts.

โ€œThank you pass it on ๐Ÿ˜‚,โ€ one Instagram user wrote. โ€œThe worst boo bucket designs released so far ๐Ÿ˜‚.โ€

โ€œIf their target audience was collectors, they dropped the ball,โ€ noted another. โ€œIf their target audience was a landfill, congratulations!โ€

โ€œIf they actually look like that, thatโ€™s a no,โ€ TikTok user @alaskananna said in a Sept. 10 video. โ€œI donโ€™t know what Iโ€™m more disappointed with: the 2024 Boo Buckets or the new Apple version.โ€

Many people complained about the lack of lids, with one commenter begging: “Can we PLEASE bring the lids back?”

On the other hand, some people love this year’s design.

โ€œOMG these look so cute,โ€ one X user wrote.

“Thanks McDonald’s,” wrote another, to which the McDonald’s account replied, “You’re welcome, Samantha.”

“Honestly thank god they look like this so I can actually get one for my kid since adults won’t snap them all,” one Instagram user wrote, to which another replied, “I was thinking the exact same thing!” Good thing!๐Ÿ™Œ.โ€
