Mazi is back at work, DL leadership and more

After an eventful weekend, Mazi Smith is ready to get back to work.

During Monday’s visit with the Dallas Cowboys, the defensive lineman revealed more details about the allergic reaction that prevented him from playing in a preseason game against the Raiders. Edge rusher Carl Lawson also explained his expectations for his new career hiatus.

Here are three things we learned at Cowboys training camp on Monday:

What caused Mazi’s allergic reaction?

It wasn’t the first time he had an allergic reaction to something he had eaten.

“I’ve had that happen a lot,” said the Cowboys defensive tackle. “You know, big guy. Eats a lot and stuff.”

“I know what to do if you have an allergic reaction. You can’t panic, especially if it’s something to do with your respiratory system. You just have to go to the hospital, get checked out and have others check you.”

Smith was on the team bus on Friday afternoon, en route to the airport to fly to Las Vegas for the Cowboys’ preseason game, when the attack occurred. He quickly notified medical personnel of the incident and stayed in Southern California rather than make the trip to the game against the Raiders.

Lawson’s fresh wind

Carl Lawson had a tryout with the Cowboys at the beginning of training camp but did not sign. After leaving, he posted a star on his social media account.

A sign of his intentions?

“Let’s leave it up to interpretation,” Lawson told reporters on Monday.

Now there’s nothing left to interpret. The veteran defensive end has signed a one-year deal with a Cowboys team that is working to improve the position following Sam Williams’ season-ending injury.

A new leader in the D-line?

Jordan Phillips said he was surprised he moved from the Giants to the Cowboys because they are division rivals.

The defensive tackle is happy to be with the Cowboys and wants to not only perform on the field but also become a mentor.

“It doesn’t matter how many tackles you make, it doesn’t matter how many sacks you get, as long as the defense is great,” Phillips said after Monday’s walkthrough practice. “I’ve been part of five or seven top-five defenses and nobody cares about stats. Once we get there and stuff like that, this defense is going to be great.”
