Mayor of Oswego proposes budget with first tax increase in years

Taxpayers in Oswego will pay more under the budget proposed Monday night by Mayor Robert A. Corradino. The $56,675,117 budget proposal calls for a 5% tax increase.

The mayor says it is the first such increase in eight years. In a prepared press release announcing the spending plan, the mayor said the increase is “a direct result of contractual obligations, debt service, insurance, health care, pension and fuel cost increases.”

The City of Oswego’s proposed budget for 2025 calls for $6,008,915 for the fire department, $7,336,623 for the police department, and $7,674,046 for the public works department.

According to the mayor’s office, the budget consists of 54% personnel costs, 21% contractual obligations, 13% fringe benefits, 10% debt and 2% equipment.

There would be no increase in sewer and water rates in the proposed budget. It would fund two new pickup trucks with snow plows for the DPW and more.

“Our commitment to fiscal responsibility remains unwavering. This budget reflects careful consideration of each item to ensure taxpayer dollars are used efficiently and effectively. I am confident we have balanced the need for essential services with the desire to minimize the financial burden on our citizens,” said Mayor Corradino.

A public hearing and a vote in the City Council are scheduled for Monday, August 26.
