“Max” has just been named the best action film of 2024 – and has a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes
I’m not really the type to watch action movies, but when I find one that really surprises me, I never forget it. One such gem is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, an epic dystopian action film that completely blew me away when I saw it in the cinema a few months ago. It’s safe to say that I left the cinema convinced that I had just seen the best action film of the year.
Furiosa is a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road and focuses on the origin story of the fierce warrior Furiosa. The film follows her journey from imprisonment to becoming a key figure in the fight against the tyrannical warlord Immortan Joe, set against a backdrop of relentless post-apocalyptic action. As you can imagine, the idea of being able to watch the film again, this time from the comfort of my own home, is just too tempting to pass up.
Now, with its release on one of the best streaming services, I knew I had to dive back into the chaos. And I can tell you, “Furiosa” is not only a great action movie, but the best Action Movie of 2024. That’s why you need to stream it on Max right now.
What is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga about?
Watch on
For those of you who haven’t seen “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” in the cinema, here is a brief summary of what it is about.
The film delves deep into the origins of iconic character Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy), who became a fan favorite in Fury Road. This prequel takes us back to her early life, showing how young Furiosa (Alyla Browne) was torn from her home as a child and thrust into a brutal, war-torn world ruled by savage warlords. We see her harrowing journey of survival and resilience as she navigates a dystopian landscape filled with deadly enemies and ruthless factions.
Unfortunately, Furiosa’s path leads her into the clutches of Dr. Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful leader who controls large parts of the desolate wasteland and wants to take over the gas supply. Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme), another powerful figure, sparks an ongoing battle, and Furiosa must endure the many trials while finding a way to get home.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is such a crazy movie
If one film is going to win the ultimate “badass” crown this year, it’s definitely Furiosa. It’s a standout action film due to its relentless, high-speed chases and unique dieselpunk aesthetic. But there’s one scene in particular that gave me goosebumps, and that’s Furiosa’s “Stowaway to Nowhere” chase scene, which involves a death-defying barrage of guns, cars, and explosions. I won’t give too much away – just know that it’s my favorite scene in the entire franchise.
However, I must commend Taylor-Joy’s portrayal of Furiosa, which is both fierce and nuanced. She brings incredible depth to her role as a skilled warrior and determined survivor despite having barely any lines in the film. Beyond the adrenaline-fueled action, however, the film manages to balance the fast-paced narrative with genuine emotion regarding Furiosa’s fight for freedom.
Of course, critics were also blown away by the film, giving it a top score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes (and it deserves that rating given its disappointing box office results). Randy Myers of San Jose Mercury News said, “It’s masterfully shot, designed, edited and directed, and features a skyscraper-high collection of breathless action sequences and a pulsing, metallic soundtrack.”
Christian Holub of Entertainment Weekly, meanwhile, spoke about the smaller, more striking emotional moments throughout the film: “Furiosa has chases, biker hordes and fiery death, but almost more striking are the small moments of beauty that you can’t find anywhere else.”
