Mavericks-Timberwolves, Celtics-76ers are the highlights of the NBA schedule for Christmas Day

The NBA schedule for Christmas Day is here.

Shams Charania of The Athletic tipped the league’s top game on December 25 on Thursday night, which should make for another great day of basketball even as the NFL tries again to squeeze in two games this Christmas.

While we wait for the full schedule to be released, here’s a look at the five games reportedly taking place on Christmas Day this season.

The New York Knicks will, as they seem to always do, host a game on Christmas Day to kick off the holidays. The Knicks will host Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs in the first game of the day at Madison Square Garden.

With the Spurs coming off their fifth consecutive losing season and missing the playoffs, and the Knicks coming off their best season in over a decade, the battle between Wembanyama and the Knicks is sure to be entertaining.

The Dallas Mavericks, after reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011, will be allowed to host a game on Christmas Day this year. They will face the Minnesota Timberwolves at the American Airlines Arena. It is a rematch of the last Western Conference Finals, which Luka Dončić and the Mavericks won comfortably 4-1 to advance to the finals. The Timberwolves won 55-26 last season to secure their third consecutive playoff berth and their first trip to the Conference Finals in two decades.

Although Dončić and the Mavericks easily defeated the Timberwolves in their series last spring, a matchup between the two clubs on Christmas Day should be great. And it will offer a good look at the Mavericks with Klay Thompson, who signed with the club after his long stint with the Golden State Warriors.

Although it won’t be the night game, this Eastern Conference clash is the best game of the day.

The reigning NBA champions host the Philadelphia 76ers at TD Garden in what could easily be a preview of a thrilling playoff series a few months later. The 76ers have rebuilt around Joel Embiid and added Paul George to their roster after failing to advance past the first round of the playoffs in the spring. The Celtics also enter the season as favorites to defend their title, and it seems they will leave nothing to chance in their attempt to defend their title.

If there is one game to watch on Christmas Day amidst the family festivities, this is it.

It’s unclear how good the two clubs will actually be this season, but the Golden State Warriors will host both LeBron James and his son Bronny in a late game on Christmas.

The Lakers made the playoffs last year through a play-in game, but were knocked out in the first round by the Denver Nuggets. The Golden State Warriors missed the playoffs entirely, in a rare rough year for the franchise that was so dominant under head coach Steve Kerr.

This is far from the best matchup of the day, but seeing James take on Stephen Curry is sure to be an entertaining game, no matter how the two teams fare in the West.

The Western Conference’s final Christmas game could be a gamble.

The Denver Nuggets, with three-time MVP Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray, are undoubtedly one of the best teams in the Western Conference and have a real chance of making it to the NBA Finals for the second time in three years next spring. But the Suns have struggled in recent years despite Devin Booker and Kevin Durant. They just lost in the first round of the playoffs and hired Mike Budenholzer to replace Frank Vogel as head coach – just a year after Vogel did the same with Monty Williams.

On paper, this game looks like it has the makings of a classic Christmas contest, but given recent developments in Phoenix, it could just be another average contest.
