Matty Barton and Amy Wyatt from “Emmerdale” are confronted with prejudice in the wedding story

Emmerdale Spoilers follow.

Matty Barton and Amy Wyatt from “Emmerdale” have to reckon with prejudice as they prepare for their upcoming wedding.

Amy proposed to Matty in March last year, but it wasn’t an easy “yes” as Matty feared that Amy was only proposing to cement her plans to gain custody of their son, Kyle.

However, Amy eventually assured him that this was not the case, and after making a grand gesture and proposing to him again at the Woolpack, the couple became happily engaged.

The couple recently set a wedding date for April, so preparations are in full swing, including choosing the all-important venue for the ceremony.

In scenes airing on Thursday 28 March, Amy and Matty decide to keep it local and choose the village hall as the venue for their wedding.

However, their joy is soon marred by Claudette Anderson’s negative reaction when she finds out that Matty is trans.

Because of her biased attitude, she forbids Amy and Matty from getting married in the parish hall because the venue is owned by the church.

While the couple’s wedding planner, Suzy Merton, immediately sets to work to find a new venue for the upcoming wedding, Matty is completely taken aback by the discrimination he has experienced from Claudette.

Later, at the Hide, Claudette’s hurtful views lead Matty to tell him that he simply wants to experience his wedding day as himself and not as a transgender role model for others.

As a result, he expresses a desire for a smaller wedding and Amy processes this while trying to hide her disappointment.

In an exclusive chat with Digital Spy Last year, Ash Palmisciano spoke about his hopes for Matty and Amy’s wedding.

“As a soap opera actor, you always want a soap opera wedding! You also want the drama that comes with it. I just love working with Nat (Ann Jamieson), who plays Amy. She’s a really good friend of mine in real life,” he said.

“We would love to film a big wedding and I think because of other things happening soon it might be a little delayed! But I would love to do it and I can’t wait.”

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7:30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
