Maryland Weather: “Helene”-related rain arrives Friday

BALTIMORE– Warm, humid and mostly dry weather this evening. Wet weather returns on Friday, with a breeze and likely periods of rain.

COASTAL FLOODING ADVISORY: Minor coastal flooding is expected in some areas at high tide until early Friday morning. At high tide, expect less than 1 foot of water above dry ground. The coastal flood warning covers southeastern Harford County, Baltimore City, southeastern Baltimore and all Anne Arundel counties.

COASTAL FLOOD WATCH: The Coastal Flood Watch is in effect for Anne Arundel County beginning at 11 p.m. this evening and lasting until 6 a.m. Saturday. Moderate flooding is possible during the early morning high tide Friday and Saturday morning, with water reaching up to 2 feet above dry ground. The afternoon tide doesn’t look as severe with up to 30cm of water forecast over dry ground.

It was a mostly dry, warm, humid and cloudy day. Temperatures reached the warmest levels of the week with highs in the upper 70s to near 80°.

Expect a cloudy and muggy evening with temperatures gradually falling into the lower 70s by 11 p.m. Overnight lows will only fall to around 70°. Showers and rain clouds will move in from the south and west this evening. Rain should begin after midnight and before sunrise Friday.

Friday will be cloudy, humid and windy. We will see waves of light to moderate rain throughout the day. Even if the day doesn’t dry out completely, many hours of the day will be wet. This rain is falling on the northern edge of Helene, which will make landfall in Florida’s Big Bend this evening. While we will see periods of light to steady rain, we will not experience any direct or severe impacts from Helene as the storm is certain to remain to our southwest.

There will likely be more rain Friday evening before it tapers off.

The weekend forecast improves for Saturday. After a residual shower from the rain on Friday evening, the day will be mostly cloudy and noticeably warmer. With tropical humidity and warm temperatures, it will feel like summer, with highs in the lower 80s. Saturday is the better half of the weekend for outdoor activities.

A separate weather maker, a high low, will slowly drift toward us late Saturday evening and snake through our area into Wednesday morning. From late Saturday night onwards, occasional showers and continuous rain are expected, lasting in waves until Wednesday morning. We will have a cool easterly wind that will keep temperatures above 60°. If you’re heading to tailgating or the Ravens Sunday Night Football game, be sure to bring a jacket and poncho. Wet weather is likely with temperatures in the mid to upper 60s.

A strong cold front will cross our area on Wednesday, bringing our final showers to the area. Later in the day the sky clears and the humidity drops. Thursday looks exceptional with plenty of sunshine, low humidity, a fresh breeze and high temperatures in the low 70s.
