Marshall University hosts the Women in Cyber Forum

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Students from Marshall University’s Women in Cyber organization and members of the community with a general interest in the field had the opportunity to expand their knowledge Monday during a forum with experts in the cyber field.

The forum was hosted by U.S. Senator Shelly Moore Capito, R-W.Va.

Leaders from the top ranks of cybersecurity gathered at Marshall University for an open discussion about ways to achieve goals and succeed in the field, with a focus on inspiring women.

“We all look at problems differently, and cybersecurity is a very technically challenging field. We need to make sure we bring different perspectives to solve the most difficult problems,” said Jen Easterly, director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

Easterly said her goal is for 50% of cybersecurity jobs nationwide to be filled by women by 2030.

“We’re at 24%, so we still have a lot of work to do,” Easterly said.

It is a goal that requires determination and a lot of support along the way.

“Everyone in West Virginia and everyone at Marshall University has a seat at the table and can do this, and we have led the way. Our Women in Cyber has been a leader since 2019. Our aviation program, Women in Aviation, is also a national leader. So just step forward and be yourself, and the rest of the world will follow,” said Brad Smith, president of Marshall University.
