ATLANTA, Ga. – Thanks to a goal in the second half from Bailey Fisher and four parades of Alexis WolgemuthThe Marshall University women’s soccer team (2-3-2, 0-0-1 SBC) opened Sun Belt play on Friday night with a 1-1 tie at Georgia State.

Fisher’s equaliser in the 84th minute, her first goal of the season, came with a header after a cross from Katie Porter.

“I think we didn’t start the game well,” said Herd Women’s Soccer Head Coach Rafa Simoes. “We made some mistakes and they punished us for it. Georgia State deserves credit for being a good team and tough to beat at home. The changes we made at halftime helped us do what we needed to do. They got us closer to our identity. Keeping the ball, taking chances and Bailey scored her first goal of the season. We had some chances to win late in the second half, but the point today was a positive start to conference play. Now we’re getting ready for a tough Texas State team.”

The Panthers opened the scoring with a goal by Emily Glenn in the 12th minute with the first shot on goal of the game.

In the 24th minute, Wolgemuth parried GSU’s next shot and kept the score at 1:1.

Kajsa Ekström and Fisher each had one shot on goal in the 30th and 31st minutes, respectively, but the Georgia State goalkeeper was able to save both attempts.

Fisher’s goal then came on her team’s fourth shot on goal of the game, which came after a perfect cross from Porter, who secured her first assist of the season.

Wolgemuth then parried three shots in the final eleven and a half minutes, keeping the Panthers from scoring and securing the away point for The Herd.

Marshall had fewer shots on goal (12:10) but had more shots on goal (6 to GSU’s 5). Fisher led MU with three shots, two of them on goal.
