Marin and Todd reach the semifinals of the US Amateurs

TULSA, Okla. – Both matches involving Arkansas golfers went into overtime in the quarterfinals, and both games ended in victories for the Razorbacks, sending Maria Jose Marin and Kendall Todd into the semifinals of the USGA’s 124th U.S. Women’s Amateur, held at Southern Hills Country Club.

Marin will face Asterisk Talley in the first semifinal match at 7:30 a.m. CT. Todd and Rianne Malixi will follow at 7:45 a.m. CT.

The USGA has changed the schedule due to weather. After the semifinals, the first 18 holes of championship play will be played. The final 18 holes of championship play will continue on Sunday.

Marin, the top seed and No. 15 in the world rankings, faced Anna Davis of Auburn, a 2024 All-American, the 2022 Augusta National Women’s Amateur champion and No. 16 in the world rankings. Marin did not take the lead until she won the match on the 21st hole, but tied the match four times – including on the 18th hole – and was never more than a point behind.

Davis quickly took a 1 up lead with a birdie on the first hole. Marin made a birdie on the fifth hole to tie. Momentum went back and forth on holes 7, 8, 9 and 10, with Davis winning holes 7 and 9 to temporarily take a 1 up lead, and Marin winning holes 8 and 10 to tie the match. After tying the next four holes, Davis won hole 15 to take a 1 up lead with three holes to go. The pair had pars on holes 16 and 17 before Marin forced extra holes by winning the 18th hole with a par. In the extra holes, each had pars on holes 19 and 20 before Marin secured the win with a birdie on the 21st hole.

Todd, the 18th seed and ranked 130th in the world, faced Kelly Xu, a 2024 Stanford NCAA Championship player and two-time All-American. Like Marin, Todd never led and was 2 down twice through the first nine holes. Xu won holes 1 and 3. Todd halved the deficit by winning the fourth hole. Xu moved back into the 2 up lead by winning the 9th hole. However, Todd won the 10th and 12th holes with birdies to tie the match. Like Marin, Todd was 1 down with three holes to go when XU won the 15th hole. Todd responded by winning the 16th hole with a birdie and the pair tied the 17th and 18th holes, forcing overtime. After both had par on the 19th hole, Todd won the 20th hole with a birdie and moved into the semifinals.
