Marcus Rashford: Manchester United striker back in form after ‘taking control’, says Erik ten Hag

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is back to his best after getting his career back on track, says manager Erik ten Hag.

After setting a personal best of 30 goals in his first season under Ten Hag, Rashford’s form dipped last season.

The 26-year-old only scored eight goals and lost his place in Gareth Southgate’s European Championship squad.

In addition, Rashford was dropped from the FA Cup fourth round match at Newport in January as a disciplinary measure after leaving the field without permission during a trip to Belfast.

“I think he’s on his way back,” Ten Hag said.

“He always knew, and every player knows, that if your lifestyle isn’t right you can’t perform. You won’t perform at the right level if you don’t lead a good and disciplined life away from (United’s training ground) Carrington.”

Rashford scored twice in the EFL Cup win over Barnsley during the week, taking his tally to three goals for the season, a mark he only reached in late December last season.

The return of legendary former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who became part of Ten Hag’s coaching team this summer, has helped, but Ten Hag believes Rashford is responsible for his own performance and needs to get himself in the right condition to play.

“A certain level of resilience is definitely necessary in this club,” he said.

“No football career is all uphill. It’s always downhill. You have to deal with that. He’s taken control and I think he’s on the way back.”

“He probably needed some help, but ultimately he has to do it on his own.

“He needs to get his life in order, get his attitude to training and games right. If he is professional, he will perform because he is a first-class player.”

England’s new caretaker manager Lee Carsley left Rashford out of his squad for the recent Nations League victories against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

However, there are more rounds of matches to be played in October and November and Ten Hag believes Rashford, who has 60 caps, will not be away from the international stage for long.

“It’s not up to me, but I think he will always be an option for any manager.”
